Shepherd = leader and caretaker of the sheep/
Shepherd = King of kings and Lord of lords
Sheepfold = the Family of God, Church
Flock = herd of sheep
Rod = a stick or pole to help herd the sheep
Staff = a stick or pole used for walking or climbing
Psalm 23 Translation from Today’s English Bible, Catholic Bible Press
The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need.
He lets me rest in fields of green grass and
Leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.
He gives me new strength.
He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised.
Even if I go through the deepest darkness,|
I will not be afraid, LORD, for you are with me.
Your shepherd’s rod and staff protect me.
You prepare a banquet for me where all my enemies can see me;
You welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
And your house will be my home as long as I live.
This has been simplified for children. Will you pray it often?
Sheep are timid and foolish (if one goes into a pit, others
follow.) They need a caring leader. God knew we also need a guide
so Jesus left the realms of glory, became human like one of us, and
then gave his life to bring us into his Kingdom. To become a child
of God we must be born into His sheepfold and accept Him as LORD of
our lives. There’s Joy in being a child of
God.
The duty of the Shepherd is to keep his promise to watch over us,
and provide for us. Our duty is to remain in his sheepfold. So
cast all your care upon the Lord for He cares for you. 1 Pt. 5: 7
